Teaching and Learning

The teaching and learning area of the Long Range Plan for Technology wants learners to have access to relevant technology 24/7, to use information to communicate, collaborate, and construct knowledge to solve real world problems, use research based strategies in all subject areas, and communicate in a effective way with different types of audiences. All four areas of the Long Range Plan for Technology are vital to the success of learners, but I chose the area of teaching and learning because I find this area the most interesting. This area caught my eye because one of the goals is for learners to have access to relevant technology 24/7. I can only hope that by 2020 we can reach this goal, however we have a long way to go. I do not feel that even a majority of the students have access to this type of technology on a regular basis. We barely have this at school. On my current campus we are thrilled to have 3 student computers in each classroom (at least in 3rd and 4th grade). The lower grade have one or two student computers. Yes, we have a computer lab, but it is never available to take a class into in order to do research or learn computer skills. The lab is used in our specials rotation where computer skills are to be taught. Unfortunately, it is typically used to do interventions such as Read Naturally or Kamico Math. I teach a district that is quite diverse socioeconomically. We have students at the poverty level to the very wealthy living in million dollar homes. Many of our students do not have access to technology other than what they receive at school. I feel that on a local, state, and national level that we will have to reprioritize how funds are spent and consider what a disservice it is to these students to not be given every opportunity to be technology literate. To be able to collaborate and construct knowledge to solve real world problems is a fantastic goal that must be achieved. I feel in order to do this we need to begin incorporating technology into all core subject areas. Of course in order for this to be accomplished the local and state representatives will have to make some important funding decisions to give every child an equal opportunity to succeed. I think that all four areas of the Long Range Plan work together and build upon one another. It is a great goal to set and I hope to see every child accomplish this goal. We would definitely be sending the students out on their own more prepared and ready for real world situations.
